Brooklyn Castle
Brooklyn Castle is a documentary concerning I.S. 318 -- a inner-city school where a lot more than 65 percent of students are from homes with incomes below the federal poverty level -- which also happens to get the highest, most winning junior senior high school chess team in the country. (If Albert Einstein, who was rated 1800, would be to join the team, he'd only rank fifth best.) Chess has altered the faculty from a cited in 2003 as a"school in need of improvement" to a of nyc's most useful. But a run of community school funding cuts that are recession-driven threaten to undermine those tough successes.
