Emily Crane loses her job because she won't give names to the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1951. She then gets a part-time job as an old lady's companion. One day, she hears a loud argument in a neighbor's house that is mostly in German. This gets her attention even more because one of the people in the argument is her main senator prosecutor.
