The United States of Hoodoo
How spirituality based on African traditions has influenced popular culture in the United States is the subject of this film. Since their landing on the coasts of North America, the ancient African gods have taken on new identities and reincarnated. In the guise of turntable mastery, improvisational talents, and mind-blowing collages, performances, and ritualistic rituals, their spirit is now manifested. Racial, religious, and rational thinking are all challenged by the film in traditional and stereotypical ways. Using interviews with musicians, writers, and artists, healers, gumbo cooks, and Mississippi Blues men, the documentary paints a picture of a culture that has always relied on a unique mix of different ethnic influences to produce its cultural diversity, allure, and vitality. The documentary is available on DVD now.
