Safety to Nome
Every February, four dozen athletes are flown to Alaska on a voyage that will test their bodies and minds, as well as their wills to succeed and live. The Iditarod Trail Invitational is the world's longest, roughest, and most remote ultra marathon, requiring racers to cycle, walk, or ski 1000 kilometers through Alaskan wilderness. More individuals have climbed Everest in one afternoon than have ridden a bicycle from Anchorage to Nome. This year, however, twenty-six racers will tackle the entire 1000-mile Iditarod Trail. The record for the quickest time is 12 days. The longest one is more than 30 feet long. The unknowns are what draw these great athletes to this event year after year in quest of meaning and excitement, but it is also the unknowns that make it one of the most dangerous races on the planet. How eager are you to part with your toes, hands, or a loved one? On the Iditarod Trail, this is what happens if you aren't prepared.
