The Cigarette
LA CIGARETTE, Dulac's first existing title, is about a liberated young lady and her older husband, who suspects she is having an affair—alluding to a genuine postwar crisis of manhood in France. Dulac mixes realistic tendencies with impressionistic visual associations, creating tension between modernity and antiquity, life and death, and masculinity and femininity using cinematic-specific techniques, editing, and more.
