The Girls in the Band
Women have long been excluded from the realm of jazz as vocalists and pianists. Little is known about the immensely gifted female trumpet players, saxophonists, and drummers who sought notoriety but were denied serious employment by men who did not want women on their bandstands. This film chronicles the history of all-girl bands and the challenges of the few who broke through the male bastions, all the way up to the present day, when phenomenally gifted young women compete against the greatest jazz musicians of their generation.
